New Governor Of Virginia Is Not A Moderate
For the past few years, California, Minnesota, Washington State, Massachusetts and Maryland have been among the top states in Socialist crazy. It's almost as if they were competing with each other to see who could drive their states into debt faster, who could implement insane laws against public safety quicker, and who could assure themselves as the ultimate example of corruption and fraud more completely.
After the election of Democrat Progressive Socialist Lefty Abigail Spanberger, Virginia raised its fist as the next loony left state of the Union. From the Washington Examiner:

They began with small bills like one demanding that teachers teach January 6th the way the Democrats want without even a mention of different views of the event, or else. Not sure what the "or else" is but it can't be good. Teachers will also be forbidden from talking about the fact that people disputed the results of the 2020 election. The Easton Gazette highlighted a new education law that would promote propaganda in the classroom:

On Monday, January 26th, Senator Saddam Salim proposed an amended bill (Senate Bill 749) banning the sale of "assault style" weapons, which in a Democrat's mind means anything that is semi-automatic and can protect its owner. Basically, anything over a 10-round magazine. This will be difficult for those Virginia gun owners who already have a gun with that capability because there doesn't appear to be a "grandfather" clause.

Add to that new tax proposals which could increase income taxes on the top bracket from 5.75% → 10%.
There is also a separate bill which adds a 3.8% surtax on capital gains and investment income. Combined, the top effective rate could reach 13.8%, surpassing California. More on those increases from Red Right Politics:

Remember when people and corporations used to move from Maryland to Virginia? Those folks will have to find a new place to go as Virginia mimics the tax and fee nightmare of its neighbor.
It seems Spanberger decided to let go the idea of "affordability" which she campaigned on. Unless you work for local or state government and can get sweet favors.
Everyone welcome HB 164 . It's a bill that would continue Virginia's headlong plunge to dept, corruption and socialism.

Previously, the State of Virginia allowed localities to give "financial assistance" to help their employees buy homes. The assistance was limited to $25,000 per employee per the grant and lifetime.
Now, sensing $25,000 wasn't enough, HB 164 removes all limits. Localities can set their own limits.
What could go wrong?
After all, who would take advantage of such a program to give money to bribe an employee, take care of a friend, or provide big bucks to a family member. That has NEVER happened! The only requirement would be that the person would have to "work" for the locality or a "constitutional officer." What is a constitutional officer in Virginia you ask?
In Virginia, a constitutional officer is a government official whose office is created by the state constitution, rather than by a statute. The term of office for these officers is fixed and defined by the constitution. The constitutional officers in Virginia include the Clerk of Circuit Court, Attorney for the Commonwealth, Sheriff, Commissioner of the Revenue, and Treasurer. They could also be "school board employees" which we can assume means all teachers and staff of a school system or local government employees such as clerks, secretaries, etc.
The stated purpose is to expand housing affordability and encourage staff members to live in the communities they serve. It sounds noble on paper, but there is so much that is wrong with this law. As we have found in Minnesota, California and other states, when government takes the lid off of these "grants" and loans, people will find a way to take advantage.
It creates a layer of people who are not only favored by the government, but also beholding to their bosses for what could be a large sum of money. This would certainly put a crimp in any public employee pointing out government malfeasance.
To top it off, Spanberger, on the day she was sworn in, rescinded Glen Younkin's Executive Order 47. That order enabled state law enforcement agencies to be more proactive in immigration enforcement. Spanberger didn't forbid law enforcement from working with ICE.

However, everyone should remember that during that campaign, Spanberger portrayed herself as a "moderate" Democrat. Only ten days after she was sworn in, she has thrown off that designation and shown her true beliefs.
