Delegate Proposes Legislation To Censor Teaching About January 6th
Those of us who live in Maryland have always admired and been just a little jealous of Virgina. After all, Virginia has been a mostly conservative state under the administration of Glenn Younkin. Their economy is strong, their schools are decent, and their laws, for the most part, are good.

That all ended after the recent election when Democrat/Progressive/Socialist Abigail Spanberger won over Republican Winsome Sears. Spanberger will be sworn in on January 17, 2026. There are many changes coming to Virginia, and the people there may want to prepare themselves for living in a state which will be the same kind of high tax, high fee, socialist swamp that Maryland has become under Governor Wes Moore. Either that or many of them, like thousands in Maryland, will relocate.
Maryland is currently a state with a very high number of citizens leaving. It's so bad the State Comptroller mentioned it. Of course, she attributed the exodus to high housing costs and unavailability of housing. She forgot the part about the cost of living due to high taxes and fees.
In fact, Maryland is number 6 in the country for loss of residents:

Of course, the current Maryland administration also doesn't mention the fact that their radical, progressive policies regarding police, juvenile crime, poor school academics and policies are driving people out of the state.
Virginia might want to take notice.
An indicator of what is to come is this law currently being introduced in the Virginia House. It is House Bill No. 333 filed by Delegate Dan Helmer, Democrat, who represents part of Fairfax County. Here is his short bio:
Helmer is an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, Iraq, South Korea, and several domestic postings. He works as a business strategist in the private sector advising both U.S. government agencies and companies. He is a Rhodes Scholar.

Basically, school systems can teach about January 6th, 2021, BUT if they do they can NOT teach both sides of the story about what happened on January 6th NOR can they talk about possible election fraud in the 2020 election.
Wow. This is a law dictators Nicolas Maduro or Kim Jong Un would be proud to enact. I wonder if the No Kings! protestors will protest against this law?
It's silly to even wonder about that.
Virginia might want to look to their neighbor to the east to see what these kinds of autocratic censorship decisions can lead to.
From 2020-2024, Maryland lost 120, 435 residents to other states. What is alarming is that these are losses of the domestic population rather than international immigrants. Large losses of domestic population leads to loss of businesses.
These aren't random moves. They're calculated decisions based on jobs, taxes, housing costs and quality of life (including schools). And increasingly, Maryland is losing in those calculations.Population shifts aren’t just numbers — they affect the economy, workforce and tax base.
- Businesses: Smaller talent pools, fewer customers and slower growth.
- Workers: Limited opportunities and rising costs push more people to leave.
- Taxpayers: Maintaining schools, roads and public services becomes harder with slower population growth.
Public schools in Maryland lost 11,000 students and are losing more every day.
Some might say that this censorship of the curriculum in Virginia is voluntary and only applies to those school systems which choose to teach about January 6th, so it's no big deal.
Others will say that this law is the same as PARENTS asking that their children NOT BE TAUGHT gender ideology in public school classrooms.
First, January 6, 2021 was an historic event. To designate the teaching of a historic event "voluntary" is shocking. Would we tell teachers they can choose whether or not to teach about the Holocaust, 9/11, Pearl Harbor, the Civil War or slavery? Of course not. People understand that these events are important for students to know about. While January 6th isn't as big an event as any of those, it is still an important contemporary event. If it wasn't, Virginia wouldn't propose a law about including it in classroom lessons, would they?
Should we be telling teachers that they can only teach this particular historic event from one viewpoint if they choose to teach it? Do we do that with any other historic event? Should we ignore the causes and reasons for this huge, mostly peaceful, protest? Certainly, a teacher can handle presenting that. After all, many of the parents, grandparents, and even teachers of the students being taught might have been involved. Should we vilify or ignore them for their beliefs?
Is Virginia ignoring the information we have discovered that January 6, 2021 was a peaceful protest turned into a violent one by state actors such as implanted members of the FBI? Is Virginia ignoring the full context of Trump's speech that day? Is Virginia turning a blind eye to the fact that the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, could have prevented any problems if she had allowed the National Guard to take charge of the situation? This is something she has admitted.
It's interesting because schools don't teach the anti-war protests of the 60's this way, and some of them involved bombings, shootings and other violence. It's the same with civil rights protests in the 60's. Social studies teachers often teach these events with the viewpoints of both sides without justifying violence or racism. Someone should ask Delegate Helmer that question.
And, how about not being able to teach that the 2020 election was questioned by many citizens. Don't they already teach this topic with the 2000 election where the decision was thrown to the Supreme Court after a vote counting controversy in Florida? What's the difference? Shouldn't students know that sometimes elections are subject to investigation?
We all know that answer to that question. More evidence is coming out about the possible fraud in the 2020 election, fraud that would have changed the results. In short, Helmer, like other Democrats, doesn't want to hear that at all.
As for comparing this proposal to allowing parents to opt their children out of gender ideology, that's comparing apples and oranges. Parents request their children to NOT be taught gender ideology because it violates their religious or moral beliefs. This is not the same as the state government telling schools how they can only teach a historic topic from one perspective, a perspective that government agrees with.
But, it's not really about any of that. I believe that Delegate Helmer has no interest in the state telling the schools how to teach the topic of January 6. He is hoping that schools and teachers will see that jumping through the hoops of teaching this topic is too much trouble, so they will skip it altogether. He's not trying to force them to teach it a certain way. He's hoping they won't teach it AT ALL. That way, students won't know what happened and it will fade away into oblivion. He wants it forgotten.
I thought that the main reason we teach history is to give people context for why things are the way they are and to keep future generations from making the mistakes of the past. Does Virginia want our kids oblivious to any event their government doesn't like or want to ignore? Don't we want them to know why things happened from different viewpoints. Won't that develop their critical thinking skills?
I think the main objective of this bill is to give Trump and Republicans a big middle finger, particularly as Congress has started investigations of the corrupt January 6 committee and key members such as Adam Schiff, Liz Cheney, et al. Helmer is trying to tell Trump that Virginia isn't with him anymore.
The thing is, I know a lot of people in Virginia who ARE with Trump. Let's hope they oppose this law and embarrass Mr. Helmer.
He deserves that.
