It has been a tumultuous time for the Harford County Public Schools in the past few years. That's putting it mildly.

Parents and community members have been shocked to hear that there were students attending schools who were accused murderers, gang members and violent juveniles while the administration of the district claimed no knowledge. A student was shot and killed in a Harford County High School.
An employee with a criminal record of embezzlement was hired to work in a school while another employee worked during the week in the schools and then went to jail on weekends. The second employee wore an ankle monitor.
The county either disregarded or didn't do a valid background check on either of the employees.
And then there was the discovery that Harford County Superintendent Sean Bulson, while representing the district at a 2024 National Conference in New Orleans approximately 18 months ago, had been burglarized by a "black woman in a green dress" while she was in his hotel room late at night. This occurred after Bulson visited a strip club. The event was shrouded in confusion and seeming obfuscation by the Superintendent, and allegedly the President of the school board, Aaron Poynton, who later resigned his position because of a new job opportunity.
Turnbull Brockmeyer Law Group reported on social media this morning that the Harford BOE voted 6-3 (8-0) that he should not continue in his job) not to renew Bulson's contract but to allow him to finish out his contract with no reduction in pay. This amounts to $150,000 while he finishes out his term on "administrative leave." This is after he had already been on leave since December.
This is instead of firing him "for cause." Many say that the district wanted to avoid having State Superintendent Carey Wright step in and delay the firing like she did in Somerset County last year. Many considered that a huge overreach of her authority and a slap in the face to local school board governance.
Others said it was a move to protect the ousted Superintendent.
Board member Melissa Hahn voted against allowing Bulson to finish out his contract and supported termination for cause. Newly elected Board President Lauren Paige Strauss voted "yes" to Bulson finishing out his contract with full pay.
Turnbull Brockmeyer Law Group also pointed out that this action meant there would likely be no further investigation of the incident in New Orleans and who knew about it and when they knew about it.
In other words, it's all swept under the rug.
It's another distressing chapter in the saga of the Harford County Public Schools, once one of the better school systems in the state.
There are no details regarding the search for a replacement for Bulson. It is assumed that the interim Superintendent will continue in the job until a new Superintendent is hired.
