Education Secretary Linda McMahon Addresses the Students of Maple Elementary
"History Rocks" Event Starts the "America 250" Celebration

Students at Maple Elementary in Cambridge were treated to a rousing visit from Secretary of Education Linda McMahon on Tuesday as the "America 250" Commission began what is being called "America's Field Trip."
The event included short speeches by McMahon, Commission member Kelly Anne Conway, Congressman Andy Harris, Maple Elementary Principal Myesha Ford to start the event.
Then, Donald Boyd, Director of Teaching and Learning took the stage in a rousing fashion and started the activities for students. Students in the audience each had poster with an American Flag on one side and a Maryland Flag on the other. They were asked various question about the history of the United States and were instructed to flip their poster to indicate their answer to the question. Questions were about who was called the "father of our country" and true/false questions about other events of the revolution.
The students got most of the questions correct, only stumbling on a geography question.
Then it was time for a "Family Feud" game between two teams of fourth and fifth graders. They were asked about how many signed the Declaration of Independence, how old Benjamin Franklin was when he signed the Declaration, and a variety of other facts. The fourth-grade team, coached by Dorchester's interim Social Studies Supervisor Mary Silva, won the contest and were awarded America 250 ball caps.
As the event ended, Secretary McMahon went to the school's music room to look at displays of American artifacts and to have pictures taken with attendees.
Notable attendees at the event were Dorchester County Board of Education members, county council members, Cambridge Mayor Lajan Cephas-Bey, and County Superintendent of Schools Jymil Thompson.
Moms for Liberty Chapter Chairs Jan Greenhawk (Talbot)and Nicole Acle (Wicomico) were among the invited in attendance.
