Somerset County Superintendent Ava Tasker Mitchell

Just a few months into Matthew Lankford's elected term as a new Board member and to serve as Board Chair, the superintendent did not agree with the direction of the Board and their policies. As a result, she filed an Affidavit on May 10, 2025 with the Maryland State Department of Education with an array of illegitimate complaints and allegations against Lankford hoping to have him forcefully removed from office and his leadership role as Chair.

The Board did not receive notice of the filed affidavit from the Maryland State Department of Education until June 6, 2025.

At the time the superintendent filed her affidavit back in May, she swore under oath that she was a resident of Somerset County when the records indicated that she was a registered voter of Anne Arundel County:

The voter registration shows that the superintendent changed her residency on August 8, 2025 through the MVA, long after she filed her sworn affidavit that claimed she was a resident of Somerset County:

Therefore, when she filed to remove the Chair, it appears that she was NOT officially a resident of Somerset County when she swore under oath in her Affidavit to remove the Chairman as a Somerset County "Resident."

After reviewing the 19-page affidavit containing zero evidence, the Maryland State Department of Education concluded that there is no wrongdoing by the Chairman.

Hoping to beat Lankford into submission, the shameful attempt by the insubordinate superintendent was unsuccessful.
