Last week the Easton Gazette did a story on Ian Roberts, the Superintendent in Des Moines, Iowa who was arrested by ICE because he is in the U.S. illegally. The story sparked concerns among many because the Superintendent fled from ICE in a district owned car and had a loaded gun, fixed blade knife and $3000 in cash in the car when he was stopped. Not only that, Roberts lied on his I-9 form when he was hired regarding citizenship.
Also of concern was the fact that a district background check did not reveal Roberts' illegal status even though he was issued a deportation order in 2024.
It seems Ian Roberts misled people on much of his past. This week, other information has come out that not only reveals his deception regarding citizenship but also his claim to having advanced degrees from certain universities.
Another interesting angle is that Roberts, who is not and has not been a legal resident, was registered to vote in Maryland, something that Democrats have claimed, "doesn't happen."
The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners revoked his license after his ICE arrest. Roberts resigned from the position.
The Des Moines School Board attempted to deflect their responsibility in the matter, even going to the extent of engendering sympathy for Mr. Roberts.

Many are demanding that the board members resign as they did not do their due diligence in the hiring. Others are sympathetic for Ian Roberts calling him an energetic and visionary educator despite his illegal status and constant lies. They say it is a "sad tale."
In their statement, the board attempts to blame the Department of Homeland Security for doing their job.
The situation highlights something else that has been going on in education nationally and, more specifically, in states and districts. Instead of holding applicants to the legal standards and background checks for district staff, it appears there are those who will forgo the processes that keep students safe from frauds and even predators to fulfill some misguided vision of equity.
Or, in some cases, the people doing the hiring are negligent.
In Montgomery County, Maryland, the school district failed to enroll over 12,000 MCPS employees in the FBI’s Rap Back program background check program. Other school districts who have failed to conduct background checks of employees are Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.
The Des Moines Board President, Jackie Norris, is running for the Senate from Iowa. If this incident is an indicator of her competence, citizens of Iowa may want to think twice before voting for her.
Perhaps Ian Roberts was a dynamic Superintendent. However, he was a liar and a con artist and that is not the role model children need. He fraudulently took a salary of approximately $300,000 a year for three years. The lies he told about his birth, his legal status, his education, and even his qualifications are the hallmarks of a man who was desperate for status. Add to this the fact that he moved to many different positions in different states in the past twenty years, and you might be able to conclude that he was running from the truth.

Sadly for him the truth caught up with him last week and he leaves a school district embarrassed and in shambles.
