In 1984 I was coaching age group gymnastics. I had not been an accomplished gymnast, in fact, I was pretty awful. But, after watching Nadia in the 1976 games I truly fell in love with a sport I was too clutzy and old to compete in. So, I started coaching in 1982 and then became a judge also.
That's when I remember seeing Jennifer Sey compete. She was a world class athlete at the "big gym" in our section of the country and she was SO GOOD. I would often think about how great it would be to be the coach of such a talented gymnast. Little did I know at the time that she, like many international level gymnasts, was being tortured by her coaches and USA Gymnastics so that she would bring home medals that would bring THEM glory and money. It was more than the physical abuses of injuries, drastic dieting, harsh training, etc.
When I read her book CHALKED UP: MY LIFE IN ELITE GYMNASTICS in 2007, I was shocked to hear that the rumors of sexual abuse of gymnasts by US team coaches was true. Of course, in recent years, that part of the USA Gymnastics culture has been exposed by the horrific Larry Nassar case where over 500 gymnasts were sexually assaulted by a U.S.A. Team Doctor. This exposure sentenced him to jail until he dies, but also allegedly caused the suicide of former Olympic coach John Geddert and lifetime bans for some of the coaches who walked the Olympic stage.
But, Jennifer Sey was one of the first to talk about the horrors of high-level competitive gymnastics. She followed the book up with an Emmy award winning documentary on Netflix called "Athlete A." If you haven't watched it, you should.
So, when I heard Jennifer was appearing on the Fire of Liberty Show with Moms for Liberty co-founder and current CEO Tina Descovich, I had to listen.
I was not disappointed.
In one of the most in-depth and adept interviews Descovich has done, she and Sey talk about the abusive nature of Sey's gymnastics career and its physical and mental effects on her, but also her life after gymnastics, her career as President of Levis, her opposition to the crazy events of Covid and how that cost her friends and that career, and how she started her own athletic apparel company XX-XY which advocates for saving women's sports from the intrusion by male athletes pretending to be women. While the details about all of her travails in life are fascinating, the most inspirational thing about this podcast is Sey's assessment of how she has overcome these obstacles by learning how to authentically stand up for the protection of children and telling the truth. It's advice all of us could use.
And, Sey shares a moving ad that XX-XY has produced to call athletic apparel giant NIKE out for supporting men competing in women's sports.
