On November 18, 2025, the Commissioners of Oxford voted unanimously to terminate Chief Chris Phillips for cause, effective immediately.

Phillips had been Chief since May 23, 2024, replacing former Chief Eric Kellner, who resigned after he replaced long time Chief Pat Maxwell who unexpectedly retired in 2022. Maxwell's retirement caused controversy in the town since it was reportedly driven by the former Town Manager and Commissioners. Maxwell had never had any notice of problems with his service in the town prior to the sudden retirement and he was well respected by the citizens of Oxford and other law enforcement agencies area and statewide.
Phillips had been in the department since 2021.
Since Maxwell's retirement, citizens of the town began investigating other improper and unethical actions by previous town commissioners and town office administration.
In recent months there had been complaints by some citizens that the Oxford Police Department, under Phillip's direction, had not been completing their assigned duties adequately. There were confrontations between Phillips and concerned residents in town meetings regarding the issue. These questions can often break the public trust in their law enforcement agencies; something the position of Chief of Police requires.
The town maintains officer Brandon Bobbick.
The town is working with the Talbot County Sheriff's Office to develop a plan for coverage of the town.
The town announced Phillips' release in an email to town residents. They did not elaborate on the reason for Phillips' release stating that it is a "personnel issue."
