Beach Remains Unfinished As Oxford Day Comes and Goes

When resident Jim Wilcox asked Cheryl Lewis, in the Sept 26, 2023 Commissioners meeting, to explain what the Strand Project will look like this is how she explained it.

Keep in mind, currently the sand berm around the beach is higher than what was approved. The Town also signed off on the project before the four foot wide footpath was created. The footpath was recently added because of residents Bob Burgner, Ron Walker, Commissioner Katrina Greer and Town Manager Holly Wahl. However, all Underwood did to "check this off the list" was to throw grass seed on the ground. Before the beach was drastically altered this area already had a beautiful grass walkway. Underwood destroyed it by building the berm. In this clip, notice how Cheryl Lewis said that -- residents wouldn't be able to see the islands. She never mentioned that the islands would have dangerous logs sticking out and red boulders for kids to play on.
Also in this clip, Lewis talks about Mac Sommerlatte’s private property that was essential for the Strand project to function. The Town of Oxford signed off on the Strand Project and gave Underwood the money before everything on Sommerlatte’s property was completed. Currently Mac Sommerlatte is looking into legal actions.
In this clip, Lewis admits that once the Strand Project is completed it will NOT stop flooding. And finally, the original plan was to also reconfigure the beach at the Yacht Club which the taxpayers of Oxford also own. But the Yacht Club said — No thanks. As it turns out the Yacht Club, which rents the land from the taxpayers of Oxford for $1000.00 a month, had more influence over Cheryl Lewis and the Commissioners of Oxford -- than the residents have over the town's public beach. Lewis said that the entire Strand Project should be done in three to four months. It’s been 18 months and phase two hasn’t started yet.
