Another victim was pulled from the site of the deadly Key Bridge collapse on the Patapsco River on Sunday. The victim's identity has not been revealed, but the body was found inside a construction truck that was on the bridge when it collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship last month.
Meanwhile the City of Baltimore has hired two law firms as they consider suing the owner, charterer and operator of the container ship that crashed into the bridge. An Atlanta law firm has also been hired to represent Construction worker Julio Cervantes Suarez, who was on the bridge but survived the plunge into the water. Attorney L. Chris Stewart confirmed that his firm would be representing Suarez as well as the families of other victims.
"What does justice look like? Stewart said, “We don’t know the answer, because what is the value of the six lives that have been destroyed?"
Upon hearing that another victim had been recovered, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott and Governor Wes Moore all expressed their condolences to the families.
"Maryland continues to pray for the families and loved ones affected by this tragedy. They have our thoughts, our hearts, and our support," Gov. Moore said. "We hope that everyone will respect the request of the family for privacy during this difficult time. As we continue to recover those who have perished, may we never forget them, their loved ones, and the commitment they made to work in a profession that bettered the lives of so many Marylanders across the state."
The workers were sitting in a construction truck on the deck of the bridge as they took a break from their work. Although the Maryland Transit Authority police were able to stop traffic coming on to the bridge, workers did not get a warning that a collision with the bridge was imminent. Governor Moore stated that the NTSB is investigating how first responders attempted to warn workers. The survivor of the collapse and a state inspector working for Eborn Industries said they both received audible warnings.
The FBI initiated an investigation of the incident on Monday centering on the fact that it was reported that electrical systems on the ship may not have been working properly before the accident.
The Corps of Army Engineers is currently working to clear the channel as more debris is removed.
