Two Israeli Embassy staff members were shot and killed on Wednesday, May 21, around 1 a.m. as they were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. The victims, Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, and Yaron Lischinsky, 30, were members of the Israeli Embassy staff.
The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, 30, from Chicago, chanted "Free Palestine" as he was taken into custody. He told police where the gun was and made statements that implied that he committed the offense. A witness stated that she heard Rodriguez say, "I did it for Gaza." The Metropolitan Police Department is leading the investigation of the murder while the FBI will be looking for "ties to potential terrorism or motivations based on biased-based crime of a hate crime."
Friends say that Yaron was planning to propose to Sarah in just a few days. They were attending an event at the Museum which included many young Jewish professionals and was open to the D.C. diplomatic community. It was intended to raise funds to help people in Gaza.
Both Milgrim and Lischinsky were said to be advocates for increasing dialogue and understanding between different religions and countries.
Via a post on Truth Social, President Trump stated, "These horrible D.C. killings, based obviously on antisemitism, must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA. Condolences to the families of the victims. So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You All!"
Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted, "We condemn in the strongest possible terms the murder of two staff members from the Embassy of Israel in Washington D.C. Our prayers are with their loved ones. This was a brazen act of cowardly, antisemitic violence. Make no mistake, we will track down those responsible and bring them to justice."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he is "heartbroken" for the families and has instructed security officials to strengthen protection arrangements for Israeli embassies around the world. Israeli embassies around the world have lowered their flags in memory of the victims.
The attack is further evidence of the antisemitic violence which has amped up in the U.S. and across the world since the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel from Gaza which were perpetrated by HAMAS and other militant Palestinian terrorist groups.
