Circling The Wagons: An Old Tactic To Preserve Complacency And Incompetence

It had to be expected. Whenever the Trump Administration, Elon Musk and his DOGE crew planned the audit and subsequent downsizing of the Federal Government, they had to know that any cuts in employees or in programs would instigate a huge outcry from Democrats, some Republicans, bureaucrats, and anyone who wants to maintain the high dollar bloated leviathan of the federal bureaucracy and federal deficit.

After all, those who are in Congress and those who work for the U.S. Government, for the most part, benefit from this structure. All we need to see is the average salary for a government worker which is shown on this interactive map:

How much money do US federal employees make? | USAFacts

While different states vary, it ranges from $80,000 to $137,000.

One third of the two million federal employees are considered GS-12 (Government Service 12 ranking) and are considered " middle and upper echelon." There are hundreds of thousands of them who are making six figure salaries.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average annual salary in the USA is projected to be around $56,000 in 2024. However, this figure can vary widely depending on industry, job role, location, and level of education. Average Salary in the USA in 2024 (Updated) : State-wise Salary in USA - GeeksforGeeks

These figures do not include fringe benefits. One also has to bear in mind that jobs in the government are probably more narrowly focused on those with college degrees and special skills, while the general average of salaries in the country may include lower-level jobs. That makes the U.S. average for the general working public considerably lower.

None of those figures include elected officials, who often come in as people of modest personal wealth and leave as multi-millionaires after just one or two terms.

The person on the street, who is often an "at will" employee who can be fired for almost any reason, cannot relate to the highly paid bureaucrat who works from home and is unwilling to justify or even explain his/her job in order to keep it.

Let's face it, the Federal Government has not been focused on job performance and accountability for decades and now we have a group of government employees who are offended that anyone expects productivity or even reporting to "in person" work each day.

Add the fact that it is Trump and his administration that is trying to make the change, and you have a recipe for a major meltdown.

The meltdown is partly those who just hate Trump and by association, Musk and any of his other appointees. No matter what Trump would do, they would hate it and call him and his followers "evil" and "Nazi's." Trust us, it happens. We have receipts.

The other part of the meltdown are those government workers who have been coddled into believing that working from home in your pajamas, doing as little as possible to get by, and only working when you feel like it, is the way life is. They are the workforce who doesn't believe that anyone, a boss, a President, anyone can tell them what to do. They are the entitled brats that Nick Adams describes in his Substack Article:

(1) The Spoiled Brat Sticker Price Generation Doesn’t Get President Trump’s Art of The Deal

It's almost amusing. Having worked in the public sector for over thirty years as a teacher and a central office administrator, I have been subject to possible reduction in force actions and even, oh woe is me, a Superintendent who demanded that all teachers and central office employees "justify their job" by handing in a weekly journal of our weekly plans or actions and accomplishments. Miraculously, most of us survived. Yes, there were those in our county who found the Superintendent's request offensive. They didn't last long.

All these current spoiled brat employees and their older counterparts who should know better, are now participating in what we used to describe in education as "circling the wagons."

As an educator of over thirty years, I saw it all the time. Teachers and employees in a school would complain about that one other teacher who never followed the rules, never kept their class under control, came in late, left early, gave inflated grades, etc. In other words, this was a bad teacher and the other teachers knew it. They would talk about it all the time and question why this person was still allowed to teach. "Why don't they get rid of him/her?" was their question.

They said that until someone wanted to do something about it. As soon as a teacher or another employee was identified by the Central office as being either incompetent, ineffective, or unnecessary prompting administrators to start the removal process, most of the staff in that school would suddenly defend that teacher/employee and decry the fact that they may lose their job.

" Oh, poor Ms. Smith. She may get fired! That's mean."

They circled the wagons around that teacher to protect her. Sometimes it worked and an incompetent teacher kept their job.

Based on what we hear from our friends who work in the federal government, a very similar thing happens. From TWITCHY:

https://twitchy.com/warren-squire/2025/02/26/federal-employee-calls-trump-hating-breakfast-club-and-unloads-lazy-govt-workers-complaining-about-doge-n2408976

We know that many federal employees are good people who take their jobs seriously and work very hard. Some of them are friends of ours and they will readily admit that they are often shocked by how little other workers do, how little some people show up at the office or how they don't even attempt to complete their work. Like teachers in a school, they can tell you who is effective and does their job and who doesn't. They want those people gone as well, they just don't want to state that in public because of negative press, threats etc.

Some of them will circle the wagons as well.

And, like I felt when I was in education, it's embarrassing for these good federal workers to know that the occupation you believe in, love and work so hard at, is being portrayed this way because of those who are incompetent, lazy and exploitive.

It's a systemic problem that has been growing since the Civil War. Yes, that long. There are actually historic political figures, Progressive Statists, who believed the bureaucratic state was the answer to making our country work. In his book AMERICAN LEVIATHAN, Ned Ryun writes:

If you boil down the essence of Progressive Statist thought, it comes to this; progress is to be achieved by the creation of a massive bureaucracy, completely separated from politics and political accountability, filled with an educated elite who are then to do the actual governing for the country. To loosely quote (President) Wilson, this educated elite would consist of "the best boys from the best colleges," who would be trained and educated in administration and applied science from a burgeoning series of colleges and universities.

This is a direct contradiction to the beliefs of the founders of this country and our Constitution, who believed that the country should be run by duly and directly elected representatives of the people. Not only that, but the bureaucratic structure has outgrown any effectiveness. Again, from Ryun:

There are somewhere over 430 departments, agencies, sub-agencies, and commissions inside the federal government today; some sources list 440, and others 443. Those include of course the major departments such as State, Defense, Treasury, Labor, Interior and the rest. But there are also entities like the Bureau of Reclamation, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, because of course every time a new federal government program is begun, a corresponding office or agency must be spun up to manage the program, which includes, again of course, more spending to manage the spending.

This doesn't mean there should NOT be federal employees at all. After all, the DOGE people themselves could be considered federal employees. The problem is that there are too many federal employees who have little or no responsibility to do their jobs efficiently and well. Add to that the arrogant attitude of those who feel they cannot be fired regardless of their lack of job performance, that they answer to no one, and you have a thuggish monstrosity that is growing by leaps and bounds. Even Elon Musk has accountability to the President!

Let's not forget that many of these federal employees who DO a good job every day will be retained. The press never mentions that.

Whether one hates Trump or not, it is critical that the American people understand that to continue growing this government leviathan will fulfill a prediction made by Ronald Reagan: (from American Leviathan, Ryun)

During his administration, Reagan pointed out during his administration, in his study of history, "he was not aware of any nation that had turned away from bureaucratic statism after having gone as far as the United States." (Devine, Donald J, Political Management of the Bureaucracy: A Guide to Reform and Control, Ottawa Illinois, Jameson Books, 2017, p. 155)

That was forty years ago.

He followed that by saying, "Although no country has come back, I would like us to be the beginning; I would like us to be the first." (Ibid, 155)

So would the American taxpayer. We need to stop the circling of government wagons.

EXTRA NOTE: Maryland Governor Wes Moore promised to hire 4,000 more employees even though the State has a projected $5 billion dollar deficit. He is offering a 34% salary increase. Expect some of these Federal employees to bloat our State Leviathan.
