Marylanders across the State received a strange mailing last week from a group called the "Center for Voting Information." The mailer was labeled "Voting Report Card for RECIPIENTS NAME." The text of the letter was:

    Dear (voter's name),

Public records indicate that you are eligible to vote in the upcoming election on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Remember, who you vote for is private, but whether or not you voted is public record.

The mailer then stated that the mailing would be sent to neighbors so THEY could see who does and does not vote in an effort to promote election participation. A chart was included that showed the person's voting record. After the chart, the letter said:

"We will be reviewing these records after the election to determine whether or not you joined your neighbors in voting."

Many recipients viewed the mailer as intimidation and threats regarding their voting records.

    AG Brown released this statement:

" Voting is among the most important rights that Marylanders have. Any action that intimidates prospective voters, especially on the eve of such a consequential election, will not be tolerated."

The AG's office and Maryland Board of Elections received several complaints about the letters.

Anyone, by Maryland law, can request a copy of the voter registration list with voters' election participation history but the law prohibits using the list to "influence or attempt to influence a voter's decision.

As we researched the Center for Voter Information out of Richmond, Virginia, we found this:

We found the other members of the organization's board here:

The initiative, which claims to be "non-partisan" seems to be anything BUT non-partisan.

The Attorney General's Press Release is here:

On a special note, a family member of this reporter received TWO of these letters approximately ONE week apart. The person doesn't live in Maryland anymore and it is shameful that the person's "voting record" was declared" below normal" on the first of the mailings.

It's good to know that the Maryland AG is handling THIS violation of voting laws in Maryland.
