Former President Donald Trump issued a statement after the assassination attempt on his life today at Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach, almost exactly two months after the assassination attempt at his rally in Butler, PA.
"I am safe and well, and no one was hurt. Thank God!
But, there are people in this world who will do whatever it takes to stop us.
I will not stop fighting for you.
I will Never Surrender!
I will always love you for supporting me.
Through our UNITY we will Make America Great Again!"
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw from the Palm Beach County, FL, Sheriff's Office, along with representatives from the Secret Service and the FBI, held a press conference this afternoon to provide an update on the incident.
Sheriff Bradshaw said that around 1:30pm this afternoon, Secret Service reported that shots were fired at Trump's golf course. Someone saw the suspect run out of the bushes and jump a black Nissan. The witness took a photo of the license plate, and reported the number to police. The police were able to put out the alert to license plate readers, which picked up a hit on that vehicle while it was driving on I-95 headed into Martin County.
The police flew the witness up to Martin County where police were able to pull over the suspect. The witness positively identified the suspect who is now in custody.
The suspect has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh.
An AK-47 style rifle with a scope was located in the bushes where the suspect was seen. The suspect also had two backpacks hanging on the fence and a GoPro presumably to record the assassination attempt.
Secret Service were about two holes ahead of Trump, who was on the 5th hole, when an agent spotted the rifle peeking through the fence.
The agent immediately engaged that suspect at which time the individual took off through the bushes.
Trump was approximately 300-500 yards from the location of the would-be assassin at the time that Secret Service fired upon the suspect. Officials are not sure right now if the suspect was able to take a shot at agents.
The FBI has assumed the role as the lead Federal law enforcement agency in the investigation of the incident. The FBI has deployed a number of resources including investigative teams, crisis response team members, bomb technicians and an evidence response team as part of its on-going investigation.
The State Attorney for Palm Beach County said that prosecutors are currently working up warrants and a motion for pre-trial detention for the suspect. Filing of these warrants and charges at the state level does not preclude federal charges that could be coming.
"And I can tell you right now, our agency with this real-time Crime Center was fabulous. That's how we got the guy," said Sheriff Bradshaw. "So be proud, be proud of your law enforcement."
This is a developing story.
