The Town of Oxford announced on Monday, June 24 that they have hired Michael Calvert as their new Town Manager. Calvert was hired to replace retiring Town Manager Cheryl Lewis who will be leaving her position as of July 1, 2024.

The Commissioners of Oxford are pleased to introduce Michael Calvert as the new Town Manager for the Town of Oxford, Maryland. Mr. Calvert holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Penn State University. With multiple years of experience in public administration, Mr. Calvert has served as the City Administrator for the City of Liberty, SC, where he oversaw daily operations, developed, and implemented policies, managed budgets, and ensured compliance with laws and regulations. His background also includes roles with Congressional staff, as well as state and local agency administration, that included responsibilities in project management, disaster recovery, and emergency management, highlighting his ability to lead teams, collaborate with various levels of government, and address community concerns effectively.
Michael’s extensive experience and dedication to public service makes him a valuable addition to our community. His proven track record in enhancing efficiency, fostering community development, and ensuring quality and impact of municipal services positions him as an excellent leader for Oxford. We are confident that under Mr. Calvert’s leadership, our town will continue to thrive. Please join us in welcoming Michael Calvert to the Town of Oxford.
Michael will receive his Oath of Office at the July 9, 2024 Commissioners Meeting.
Many in the town are hoping that Mr. Calvert will bring a fresh set of ideas and new professional practices to the town. A search of social media found that the City of Liberty and Oxford share some similar issues of possible annexation, water rate increases, and citizen demands for transparency and accountability from elected officials and employees even though the South Carolina Town has over five times the population. Mr. Calvert resigned his position before the end of his three-year contract.
