Baltimore: The Francis Scott Key Bridge which collapsed after being hit by a container ship on March 26 underwent a "controlled demolition" on Monday, May 12. This demolition was the means to remove the container ship from the Baltimore Harbor site. The ship has been stalled in the location of the accident.
The crew of the ship has also been kept on board as the FBI investigates the incident to determine if there was any criminal act that caused the collision. They were kept in a safe location on board during the demolition.
Authorities have opened a partial shipping channel near the site but plan to have the channel completely opened in three to six months. Bids are currently being taken to build a new bridge on the site. Cost of the new bridge is estimated to be $1.7 to $1.9 with an optimistic completion date of 2028 according to Maryland officials. The accident has prompted questions about the structural soundness and safety of many of Maryland's bridges as well as bridges throughout the country.
