The DOJ has agreed to pay more than $100 million to a group of survivors of sexual abuse at the hands of USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar an anonymous source confirmed on Wednesday.
This comes approximately three years after a report by the Justice Department Inspector General criticized FBI officials for failure to respond to the allegations against Nassar with " utmost seriousness and urgency."
This brings the total payouts from various sources to victims of the abuse to almost 1 billion dollars. The money will go to approximately 100 victims who filed legal claims against the FBI in 2022. The group includes Olympians Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, and Aly Raisman.
It was discovered that the FBI did "limited follow up" when the allegations against Nassar were made. One of the victims, McKayla Maroney testified in a congressional hearing following the 2021 report.
"What is the point of reporting abuse if our own FBI agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in the drawer?" Maroney asked.
Nassar worked for 18 years as the National Team Doctor of the U.S. national gymnastics team as well as at Michigan State. Michigan State paid $500 million to victims. USA Gymnastics paid victims $380 million. He had 265 victims and was sentenced to multiple life sentences.
