David Axelrod, one of Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign’s chief architects and strategists, is leading the call for Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential campaign after a poll found Biden trailing behind Trump just months before the primary and caucus season begin.
David Axelrod pointed to Sunday’s polling from the New York Times and Siena College that found Biden trailing behind Trump in five key 2024 battleground states - Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Biden won those states in 2020 when he ran against Trump.
Axelrod wrote on X that the data “will send tremors of doubt thru the Party” and will create “legitimate concern.”
“Only Joe Biden can make this decision,” wrote Axelrod.
“If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party,” he posted.
“What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”
Axelrod noted there is a “risk associated with changing course now, as there is little time left for a primary campaign…” he added.
“The POTUS is justly proud of his accomplishments,” Axelrod tweeted.
In a warning to the Biden campaign camp, Axelrod noted “the the stakes of miscalculation” are “too dramatic to ignore.”
The poll consisted of 3,662 registered voters.
Trump led overwhelmingly on issues of immigration, national security and the war between Israel and Hamas.
Two-thirds of the respondents said the country is moving in the wrong direction under Biden’s leadership.
Only 37% trust Biden with the economy in comparison to 59% who trust Trump with the economy.
Voters under the age of 30 favor Biden by only a single percentage point.
Biden carries Hispanic voters by single digits.
Traditional democratic black voters are registering 22% support for Trump.
Former Democratic National Committee Chair and Pennsylvania Democratic State Chair Ed Rendell says Biden’s age is a factor, but he hesitated to call for Biden to rethink or call for him to drop out of the race.
“There is nervousness among the donors and some of the elected officials that Joe Biden won’t be a strong candidate because of doubts Americans have about his health. And those doubts have been expressed in the polls,” Rendell acknowledged in a WABC 770 interview with John Catsimatidis.
“If you ask them … ‘If it’s Joe Biden running against Donald Trump, who would you vote for?,’ they are almost unanimous that they vote for Joe Biden,” Rendell stated.
But, Rendell still believes Biden can win.
“I think Joe Biden will run, can win, and will win — especially if the candidate is Donald Trump.”
